Cardiac Catherization

Millions of Americans live with heart disease. Some don’t even know they have it. Heart disease is our nation’s number one cause of death, coming ahead of cancer, diabetes and traumatic injuries. That’s why it’s important to get heart disease diagnosed and treated quickly.

What is cardiac catheterization?

One procedure that is both a test and a treatment is called cardiac catheterization. Cardiac catheterization is a procedure that involves passing a thin flexible tube (a catheter) into the right or left side of the heart. The catheter is most often inserted through the groin or the arm. Cardiac catheterization is used to diagnose cardiovascular problems such as common heart and blood vessel conditions, chest pain, coronary artery disease, leaky or narrowed heart valves, high blood pressure in the lungs or blood clots in the lungs from embolisms, or even an enlarged heart. Overall, it can reveal how healthy your heart and blood vessels are, and treat heart valve problems, clogged arteries and other heart defects.
